Layers of frozen matter record a fragment of the world —

a political, social, and material memory captured inside melting time.

A miniature vehicle frozen inside a block of ice becomes a cross-section of urban memory —

a sediment of speed, economy, and the politics of movement.

속도, 경제, 이동의 정치가 한 덩어리의 지층처럼 압축되어 있다.

Flowers suspended in ice reveal the tension between life and preservation.

Nature is archived, fossilized, and transformed into a frozen ecology.

얼음에 매달린 꽃은 생명과 보존의 긴장을 드러낸다.

자연은 기록되고, 화석화되고, 얼어붙은 생태로 변형된다.

Three frozen objects glow like fractured monuments.

Within them, political, domestic, and personal residues overlap into a single frozen landscape.

세 개의 얼음 오브제는 부서진 기념비처럼 빛난다.

그 안에 정치적·가정적·개인적 잔여들이 한 풍경으로 겹쳐져 있다.

Ice Strata — Memory, Politics, and the Frozen Self

The Ice Strata series begins with an encounter between objects and frozen time.

Everyday materials — a miniature car, flowers, fabric, labels — are sealed inside blocks of ice, not to preserve them, but to reveal the layers of memory they carry. As the ice freezes and melts, it creates geological structures: ridges, fractures, sediments, and cloudy internal storms. These formations behave like non-human archives.

In this process, matter becomes political.

The car references the circulation of economy and urban movement;

the flowers evoke ecological memory;

the fabric and printed labels reveal cultural identity and consumption.

When these objects are frozen, they no longer belong to the world where they were used. They enter another system — the Ice Civilization — where memory is produced by temperature, pressure, and the slow violence of melting.

The works propose a question:

What forms of identity emerge when matter, not humans, arranges the archive?

Within the frozen layers, domestic residues overlap with global tensions.

Childhood, labor, desire, and consumption coexist inside a single melting block.

This stratification becomes a portrait of the self, not as an individual, but as a field of social and material forces.

Ice Strata reveals that identity is geological.

Our lives consist of layers: political, economic, ecological, and emotional.

By freezing ordinary objects, the works isolate these layers and compress them into visible fragments. As the ice melts, the archive becomes unstable — a reminder that identity is never fixed, only temporarily held in a fragile equilibrium.

Ice Strata — 기억, 정치, 그리고 얼어붙은 자아

‘Ice Strata’ 시리즈는 일상의 사물들이 얼어붙은 시간과 만나는 지점에서 시작된다.

미니카, 꽃, 천조각, 라벨 같은 물질들은 보존되기 위해 얼려지는 것이 아니라,

그 안에 숨겨진 기억의 층을 드러내기 위해 얼음 속에 봉인된다.

얼음은 얼고 녹는 과정에서 지층 같은 구조를 만든다 —

능선, 균열, 침전물, 내부에서 일어나는 흐릿한 폭풍.

이 모든 것은 인간이 아닌 물질의 아카이브처럼 작동한다.

이 과정에서 물질은 정치적이 된다.

차는 경제와 이동의 구조를,

꽃은 생태적 기억을,

천과 라벨은 소비와 문화적 정체성을 드러낸다.

한 번 얼려지면, 이 사물들은 더 이상 원래 세계에 속하지 않는다.

온도와 압력, 그리고 녹는 시간의 느린 폭력에 의해 기억이 형성되는

얼음 문명이라는 또 다른 체계로 들어간다.

작업은 질문한다.

기억의 배열을 인간이 아닌 물질이 수행한다면, 정체성은 어떻게 드러날까?

얼음의 층위 안에서는 개인적 기억과 사회적 잔여가 겹쳐진다.

유년기, 노동, 욕망, 소비…

서로 다른 층위가 하나의 녹아가는 조각 속에서 공존한다.

이 지층은 개인의 초상이라기보다,

사회적·정치적·물질적 힘들이 교차하는 하나의 풍경이다.

‘Ice Strata’는 정체성이 지질학적임을 드러낸다.

우리는 여러 층위 — 정치, 경제, 생태, 감정 —가 쌓인 존재다.

사물을 얼리는 과정은 이 층들을 고립시키고,

잠시나마 눈에 보이는 형태로 압축한다.

얼음이 녹아갈수록 이 아카이브는 불안정해지고,

정체성이 단단한 것이 아니라

늘 흔들리는 임시적 균형임을 보여준다.
