The Operation of a Refined State — The Condition of Icarus

The melting and flow of ice generate a history.

This history is recorded through friction, and within it, ice no longer functions as a passive material.

It behaves as a non-human system that reacts, adjusts, and recalibrates itself according to given conditions.

In this sense, ice operates almost like an artificial intelligence—

a structure that evolves through feedback rather than intention.

Here, ice is not nature in its pure form,

but a metaphorical structure of a society that has already been engineered and refined.

The contrast between black and white,

the act of drawing boundaries and distinctions,

functions as a language of order and control.

Yet the moment thermal energy intervenes,

this order is overturned through play.

The physical laws remain intact,

but their meaning begins to collapse.

If Newton’s apple symbolized the discovery of gravity,

the ice in this work embodies a different impulse:

a form that recognizes gravity and yet continues to move upward.

What matters here is not the fall itself,

but the decision to proceed despite foreseeing it.

I understand this condition as a third form of self-preservation—

neither conservation nor destruction,

but a mode of testing oneself within refined conditions.

Ultimately, this work reactivates the figure of Icarus

through the desire to grasp what is already known,

to hold ice that has been named, categorized, and stabilized.

Icarus is not a figure of failure.

He is the one who continued to ascend

after recognizing the limit.

My work records that precise moment:

the dangerous yet inevitable operation

of a refined state attempting to exceed itself.

얼음의 녹음과 유동은 하나의 히스토리를 만든다.

그 히스토리는 마찰을 통해 기록되고,

얼음은 더 이상 수동적인 물질이 아니라

스스로 반응하고 판단하는 비인간적 시스템처럼 작동한다.

이 과정에서 얼음은 마치 AI처럼,

주어진 조건 안에서 스스로의 상태를 조정하며 진화한다.

이 작업에서 얼음은 자연이 아니라

이미 조작되고 진화된 사회의 은유적 구조에 가깝다.

블랙과 화이트의 대비,

경계와 구분 짓기는

질서와 통제의 언어처럼 작동하지만,

열에너지가 개입하는 순간

그 질서는 유희처럼 전복된다.

물리 법칙은 유지되지만,

그 의미는 흔들린다.

뉴턴의 사과가 중력의 발견을 상징했다면,

이 작업에서 얼음은

중력을 인식한 이후에도

계속해서 위로 나아가려는 광기를 품는다.

여기서 중요한 것은 추락이 아니라

추락을 예견하면서도 멈추지 않는 선택이다.

나는 이 상태를 제3의 자구로 이해한다.

보존도 파괴도 아닌,

정제된 조건 안에서 스스로를 시험하는 방식.

결국 이 작업은

태양에 가까이 다가가려는 욕망,

즉 알려진 얼음을 손에 쥐고자 하는 충동을 통해

이카루스를 다시 호출한다.

이카루스는 실패의 신화가 아니다.

그는 한계를 인식한 이후에도

여전히 날아오르려 했던 존재다.

나의 작업은 바로 그 지점,

정제된 상태가 스스로를 넘어서려는

위험하고도 필연적인 작동을 기록한다.
